Kedarnath is one of the four sacred shrines in the Char Dham Yatra, holding a special place in the hearts of Hindus. Nestled in the serene and majestic Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand, India, this pilgrimage offers a unique combination of spiritual solace and natural beauty.

Location: Rudraprayag District, Uttarakhand
Significance: Kedarnath is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is located near the Mandakini River and the majestic Kedarnath range. The pilgrimage to Kedarnath is arduous but rewarding, often considered the most remote and mystical of the Char Dhams.

Significance:

Kedarnath is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas dedicated to Lord Shiva, revered as a prime deity in Hinduism. According to legend, after the Kurukshetra war, the Pandavas sought the blessings of Lord Shiva to atone for their sins. Shiva, initially evading them, eventually took refuge in Kedarnath, transforming himself into a bull. When the Pandavas finally found him, he submerged himself into the ground, leaving behind a hump, which is worshipped as the idol in the temple. Kedarnath is also part of the Panch Kedar pilgrimage circuit, making it an essential destination for Shiva devotees.

Location:

Kedarnath is located in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand, India. Perched at an altitude of 3,583 meters (11,755 feet) above sea level, it lies near the head of the Mandakini River, surrounded by lofty, snow-capped peaks. The closest road access point is Gaurikund, which is about 16 kilometers from the temple. From Gaurikund, pilgrims must undertake a trek to reach Kedarnath.

Key Attractions:

1. Kedarnath Temple: The ancient stone temple, believed to have been originally built by the Pandavas and later revived by Adi Shankaracharya, stands strikingly amidst the rugged landscape. The temple's architecture, spiritual ambiance, and the devotion of pilgrims create a serene atmosphere.
2. Bhairav Temple: Located a short distance from Kedarnath Temple, this shrine is dedicated to Bhairav Nath, the fierce incarnation of Lord Shiva, who is considered the guardian of Kedarnath during the winter months when the temple remains closed.
3. Shankaracharya Samadhi: This is the final resting place of Adi Shankaracharya, who is believed to have attained Samadhi here at the age of 32 after reviving Kedarnath and other Char Dham shrines.
4. Vasuki Tal: A high-altitude lake located about 8 kilometers from Kedarnath, offering stunning views and a peaceful environment for meditation and reflection.
5. Gandhi Sarovar: Also known as Chorabari Tal, this glacial lake is situated around 3 kilometers from Kedarnath. It is believed that Mahatma Gandhi's ashes were immersed in this lake.

When to Visit:

The best time to visit Kedarnath is from May to June and September to October. During these months, the weather is relatively mild, and the terrain is accessible. The temple opens to devotees in April or May (Akshaya Tritiya) and closes in November (Kartik Purnima) due to severe winter conditions. The monsoon months (July to August) should generally be avoided because of the risk of landslides and heavy rainfall.

Day 1: Arrival in Haridwar / Rishikesh

• Arrive in Haridwar or Rishikesh.
• Overnight stay in Haridwar / Rishikesh.

Day 2: Haridwar / Rishikesh to Guptkashi

• Drive (approx. 7-8 hours, 205 km) to Guptkashi.
• Visit Ardhnarishwar Temple in Guptkashi.
• Overnight stay in Guptkashi.

Day 3: Guptkashi to Gaurikund and Trek to Kedarnath

• Early morning drive (35 km) to Gaurikund.
• Begin the 16 km trek to Kedarnath.
• Arrive in Kedarnath, visit the temple for evening Aarti.
• Overnight stay in Kedarnath.

Day 4: Kedarnath to Gaurikund and Drive to Guptkashi

• Attend early morning Aarti at Kedarnath Temple.
• Trek back to Gaurikund.
• Drive back to Guptkashi.
• Overnight stay in Guptkashi.

Day 5: Guptkashi to Haridwar / Rishikesh

• Drive back to Haridwar or Rishikesh.
• Evening free for local sightseeing.
• Overnight stay in Haridwar / Rishikesh.

Day 6: Departure

• Depart from Haridwar / Rishikesh to your onward destination.
