Yamunotri is situated in the Uttarkashi District of Uttarakhand, India, nestled at an altitude of 3,293 meters (10,804 feet) in the western Garhwal Himalayas. The journey to Yamunotri takes pilgrims through picturesque valleys and rugged mountain terrain.

Key Attractions:

  1. Yamunotri Temple: The main temple dedicated to Goddess Yamuna is a significant attraction. Built in the 19th century by Maharani Gularia of Jaipur, the temple houses a black marble idol of the goddess.
  2. Surya Kund: A hot water spring near the temple where pilgrims cook rice and potatoes to offer to the deity. The water is believed to have healing properties.
  3. Divya Shila: A rock pillar near the Surya Kund, considered holy, where devotees perform rituals before entering the Yamunotri Temple.

When to Visit:
The best time to visit Yamunotri is from late April to early November. The temple opens on Akshaya Tritiya and closes on Yama Dwitiya (Bhai Dooj) after Diwali for the winter season. Summer months (May to June) offer pleasant weather, while post-monsoon (September to October) is also ideal for the journey.

Itinerary:
Day 1: Arrival in Dehradun/Haridwar

  • Arrival in either Dehradun or Haridwar.
  • Transfer to the hotel for an overnight stay.

Day 2: Dehradun/Haridwar to Barkot (7-8 hours, 170 km)

  • Early morning departure to Barkot.
  • Check-in and overnight stay at the hotel in Barkot.

Day 3: Barkot to Yamunotri and Return (5-6 hours trek each way, 36 km drive)

  • Drive from Barkot to Janki Chatti (36 km).
  • Trek from Janki Chatti to Yamunotri (5-6 hours, approximately 6 km).
  • Upon reaching Yamunotri, perform rituals and take a dip in the holy waters.
  • Visit Yamunotri Temple, Surya Kund, and Divya Shila.
  • Trek back to Janki Chatti and return to Barkot for an overnight stay.

Day 4: Barkot to Uttarkashi (4-5 hours, 100 km)

  • Journey from Barkot to Uttarkashi.
  • Visit Vishwanath Temple in Uttarkashi.
  • Overnight stay at the hotel in Uttarkashi.
